MSD have released a new Outcomes Tool

The eagerly awaited follow up to the 2013 blockbuster Organisational Capability Tool has been released. The Outcomes Capability Planning and Assessment Tool is here. The original tool took an organisation wide look at capability across 10 areas. The new tool focuses on outcomes.

Like the original it is based around three steps – assessment, planning and then implementation. The tool guides you through the first two so you are ready for the third. The focus is on answering why, what, how and who for your organisation.

There are two documents – the Tool itself and Guidance Material which explains the thinking behind the tool and suggests how to use it.

Whilst named a tool this is in actual fact a flat PDF – there is no interactivity but the guidance has a handy table to record the rankings you decide on.

You decide the ranking by comparing where you are as an organisation with statements in four boxes – Aspirational, Emerging, Good & Transformative.

There is a checklist but rather than being worded as a checklist it’s actually a series of questions requiring complex answers. An example from the checklist is:

Clarity of organisational purpose

  • What does your organisation exist to do in your community? What business is your organisation in?
    • What are your mission / goals?
    • What and who is your community?
    • Who are your clients?
    • What are the reasons why people might use your services?
    • What sort of changes might people expect to make coming here?

Useful stuff but it seems like this is a sizeable chunk of work to undertake for an organisation and there will need to be guidance on what to do if you aren’t up to scratch in an area. As an MSD tool there is a focus on recognising alignment on MSD/Community Investment Strategy Outcomes but this should tranfer to any other funder/stakeholder required emphasis.

If you’d like a facilitator to guide you through the questions and issues the tool raises Connect South staff Bronwyn Boon and Rob Tigeir are available.

You can read more about the tool and download it and the guidance at www.msd.govt.nz/about-msd-and-our-work/work-programmes/community-investment-strategy/outcomes-capability-planning-and-assessment-tool.html or access the PDFs below.

Assess your organisation!

nznavwww.nznavigator.org.nz is a New Zealand website dedicated to helping you assess the viability of your NonProfit. You can share the online questionnaire with colleagues and board members and it will automatically join the results or just answer the questions yourself for a quick report on performance.

You can trot through the questions in about 10 minutes.

Once complete you are provided with a report showing how you have ranked across different areas:

  • Direction
  • Governance
  • Leadership
  • People
  • Administration
  • Finances
  • Communication
  • Evaluation
  • Relationships

You are then directed to resources that will help you develop in the relevant areas.

You can come back later and complete the assessment again and you’ll be shown a comparison.

This is simple tool that can help you reflect on your organisation and find out how you and your NonProfit can develop further.
