Public submissions are now open for MP Sue Moroney’s Private Members’ Bill, which seeks to extend paid parental leave to six months.
The Parental Leave and Employment Protection (Six Months’ Paid Leave) Amendment Bill had its First Reading on Wednesday 25 July. The Bill will now go to the Government Administration Select Committee where public submissions can be made. The closing date for submissions is Friday 5 October.
The 26 For Babies coalition was launched on 26 July at Parliament. This coalition brings together child and parent advocates, breastfeeding organisations, health bodies, and other representatives in a campaign focused on new-born infants.
26 for Babies will be working to build public awareness and encourage the Government to ensure that the objective of the Bill is achieved: longer paid parental leave in the interests of babies and their families.
The 25 for Babies website has further information about their objectives, plus downloadable resources outlining their stance on the Bill, and comparing New Zealand’s existing paid parental leave arrangements with those of other countries.
