REACHING OUR (Sustainable Development) GOALS
A Public Health Association Otago & Southland Food For Thought Breakfast
Presented by Dr Hilary Phipps, University of Otago’s Sustainability Manager
Last year New Zealand signed up to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Unlike the Millennium Development Goals they replace, the SDGs bring health, social justice, economic development and environmental sustainability together.
The goals are relevant to countries at all levels of economic development. Many of them will be challenging goals for New Zealand to meet.
All sectors of society will need to engage including national and local government, the health sector, businesses and education. Universities can play an important part in operationalising the SDGs as socially progressive, large educators, researchers, procurers and employers.
Dr Phipps will talk about the work the University of Otago is doing to play its part in delivering the SDGs and its relevance to public health.
